Monthly Vox: 15 (August/September) - Spooky Greetings and Shameless Procrastination

Heyoo! It's another one-two punch for this vox. I've been working a lot and my uni work is picking back up. I've also had a commission to do but more on that later.

For the last couple of months I've doing a fair amount of hobbying so I'm going to take you through them now. Here's what I've been up to!

T'au Fireblade Cadre (Custom Sept Test Scheme)

While the bulk of my Tau will be mostly-orange, I've opted to do the various higher ranks like Shas'ui, etc, as an inverted variant of that scheme. This is mostly because, with my limited knowledge of the T'au, I'm pretty sure that's just how they do things (filthy backwards xenos). Either way, this model was super fun to paint up and made me realise that most T'au models also seem to be, though I'm sure after 200 breachers I will have a different opinion.

Chaos Lord

Fully converted to wield the twin daemon weapons granted to the Emperor's Children in the Chaos Space Marine codex, this dude, with the right warlord traits, can be an absolute blender of swarms and hordes, all while looking badass doing it. I converted this guy up using a head from the Chosen kit and some swords from one of the Age of Sigmar Lumineth kits.

Vindicare Assassin / Operative Umbral-six

Operative Umbral-Six, the Warhammer+ 1-year subscription reward, was a very fun one to paint up during a weekend-long binge of 'Peep Show'. As I said, I've been busy... While I question the legality of this model, there's no doubting it's a cool sculpt and it looks awesome up among my spare terrain on my shelf, keeping lookout for the next kill. This model served as great practice for weathering and damaged metals and I'm very happy with how it turned out.

Salamanders Commission

Commission painting has been a great way to get out of my comfort zone. During August I finished my third Salamanders commission for a client, bringing the total up to what must be at least a thousand points by now. You'll have to head over to the fistfulofbeans TikTok (here) to check out more of that, however.

Closing Words

I am aware the site has been a little quiet. Trust in the process. Stuff is coming! In the meantime, keep any eye on my various socials and I hope everyone has a nice halloween and a nice Darktide Beta for those playing!

Monthly Vox: 13/14 (June/July, 2022) - Nervous Laughter

 Sup!

So, as I said over on Twitter and Instagram a little while back, this one is gonna be a double whammy. Over June and The start of July I moved house and, while I have much more room now, it did disrupt things slightly. That being said, I tried my best to get painting done when I could and for the last couple of weeks I have been more or less setup with a lot of my time being spent finding a new job, which I am happy to say I have now done.

I'm now comfortably setup in my own space that serves as both bedroom and office and, while messy, I'm happy with how it's taking shape!

There's still a ways to go but I plan on utilising this space to not only make painting more efficient and comfortable, but also the creation of content for the few regulars I have to this site and my socials. You guys rock! I've already began making short-form content over on the Fistful of Beans TikTok account where I plan on showcasing completed projects as well as spreading what little painting wisdom I possess. So check that out if you're interested.
Anyway, onto the Vox!

Modelling and Painting

Black Templar Primaris Techmarine

The remembrancers among you may recall seeing this chap way back in June 2021's Monthly Vox: 2. I can now say that, over a year later, I have finally put some paint on him. I wasn't too keen on the model I'd created and had been putting him off. However, while not perfect, I am more than happy with how he turned out and he was a great quick paint job. He will make an excellent second Techmarine in the rare instance where I bring two. Rock on red dude!

This guy was also featured over in a tutorial on TikTok about creating your own contrast paints with contrast medium and water.

'Order of the Glacial Sun' Scheme Test

My most recent package from Imperium Magazine has put me on possession of a handful of Sororitas. Naturally I opted to make them the faithful and stoic protectors of my homebrew frozen world, Gelidia. I opted to give them a suitably cold colour scheme and, when appropriately based with snow and imperial ruins, they should look even better. For now I am happy with them serving as a proof of concept until their reinforcements arrive with another Imperium Magazine delivery.

'Elysian Phantoms' Scheme Test

The most exciting project I began this month was my Emperor's Children warband, the Elysian Phantoms. I had written some bits and bobs about them for Warzone: Gannach, but I fell off painting them due to pink being such a bitch to work with. However, my purchase of an airbrush and finally landing on a scheme I like has got me going into them full force. I've ordered more models and I've bought the codex. So far I've only played one doubles game with them and they performed pretty well. I'm confident I'll be able to do more with them once I learn the common strategems and get some more games with them under my belt.

In fact, I was so excited about this scheme that I posted a short showcase over on TikTok, making use of my newly acquired turntable.

Closing Words

So that was 2 months! I know, I know, it's not much. But thats how it is sometimes. I hope you have enjoyed, regardless. Regularly scheduled programming will pick back up soon.

Cheers,

Ryan

Integral Changes to Warhammer 40k Chapter Approved Matched Play

With the announcement of Warzone: Nephilim recently, GW have given us some things to think about in regards to how Matched Play games of Warhammer 40,000 will operate for at least the next 6 months. In an article over on the Warhammer Community, GW unveiled a short preview of the new Matched Play rules and what we can expect going forward. Here at Fistful of Beans, I've worked my way through them to hopefully shed some light on just how they'll work and what we can expect. So, let's get into it.

Secondary Objectives Overhaul

In my opinion, the most welcome change, Games Workshop has consolidated all Secondary Objectives into the new Warzone: Nephilim book. This also includes faction-specific secondaries found in each of the different codices which means "No more flipping between books". In addition to this, we even have some faction-specific secondaries for factions that are yet to receive a codex, such as World Eaters and Astra Militarum. Whether or not these are the ones we will get in each respective codex, or simply there just to tide us over until those books release is up for speculation.

Additionally, instead of beginning with no objectives and then selecting them, players will begin with one 'default' from each category and then be able to swap them out. While this is functionally the same, the choice to make the defaults Assassination, Grind Them Down, and Behind Enemy Lines, allows for a sense of uniformity and should hopefully speed up pre-game shenanigans since these are all very commonly picked. It's far easier to say, "Instead of Behind Enemy Lines I'll take Engage" and be done with it with the assumption that the other two will be the defaults than it is to list all three. Again, a very minor change but certainly not a bad one. You're seemingly still welcome to swap out all three if you wish.

In addition, there are now no limits to how many faction-specific secondaries you can choose to take at any one time. I should say, as someone who rarely takes faction secondaries besides Oaths of Moment, I didn't even know there was a limit of one. Either way, that limit is now done away with. You'll be able to take all three secondaries as faction-specifics if you wish.

Command Points Halved! (And also Doubled..)

The main change, and one I personally am not particularly fond of but I understand why they did it, is the upcoming alterations to Command Points. Players will now begin each game with half as much CP as they would usually. Additionally, Warlords must now pay combined 2CP to get their Relic and Warlord trait by making use of two new core pre-game requisitions. Since this now means that Incursion (1000pt) games will now start each player with 1 CP assuming they build their list traditionally. Now, thankfully, players will still receive 1 CP at the beginning of their Command phase, and now additionally at the beginning of their Opponent's as well, so in some ways it balances out. However, for pre-game CP-hungry armies like my own Black Templars, this is still less than ideal.

In addition to these alterations, Warzone: Nephilim will feature nine missions for both Incursion and Strike Force games, hopefully designed with these alterations in mind. Furthermore, it also includes the Warhammer 40,000 core rules, doubling it up as a rule book and pretty much rendering the existing BRB obsolete other than lore. Either way, if you're looking to drop £30 on GW's bi-annual flavour, you'll be able to pre-order this Saturday.

Conclusion

So what do you think of these changes? Are they a welcome addition of should GW have left well enough alone?  Let me know over on the Fistful of Beans socials. You can find them at the bottom of the page :)

Cheers,
Ryan

Monthly Vox: 13 (May, 2022) - Questionable Performances

Guess who's apathetic and bad at time management... This guy! A staggering week into the current month of June is probably a record for how late one of these monthly updates has been so far. Unfortunately Uni has been putting some big plates of bullshit in front of me and I'm not allowed to leave the table 'til there's nothing left. I've also been playing a lot of Fallout 4 but we'll move past that... 👀

May was a good month for my hobbying. A local Warhammer 40K doubles tournament prompted me to get a bit of painting done, and final prep is going into place for my move next month. It's all a little bit up in the air but it's certainly exciting (for me, at least)!

Modelling and Painting

Chaplain Grimaldus and Retinue

A generally great kit with an awesome pose and satisfying little trinkets to paint all over, Grimaldus was as fun as I had expected him to be to paint. I kept pretty close to the box art in terms of colours used but made sure to put my own little twist. You'll see below that I voted to do the servitor colours more inline with how I did the ones on the model for High Marshal Helbrecht. I also made sure to use my usual recipe for black armour for the sake of consistency.

The servitors were great fun to paint. They're varied enough to each feel like it's own unique model. The 'Remnant of the Fallen Temple' (large stone aquilla) in particular was an interesting exercise in marble masonry and stone texturing that I think I did well if I can shag my own arse for a moment. Sadly, since I was painting for about 20 hours straight by this point, my highlighting was a little lacklustre.

Redemptor Dreadnought 'Dullahan'

I really tried to go 'balls deep' with this guy. I wanted to demonstrate a noticeable difference between him and my previous redemptor and it's safe to say I definitely have! I'll probably go back and improve the previous one (again) to be on par with this guy but for now it's a welcome contrast demonstrating how my painting has improved over the last year or so.

You can tell I was enjoying painting this guy because I put the time in to free hand the shoulders, something I almost-never do! I think I did a good job of the left shoulder, faithfully recreating the Gannach Crusade heraldry. The other shoulder is a little 'meh' but it's still better than a a plane old decal in my humble opinion.

Atlas Tabletop 'Even Better with Friends' Doubles Tournament

It's time for another tournie! This time the venue was Atlas Tabletop Gaming in the Gloucester Quays, ran by my GTGC clubmate, and good friend, Karl. My partner for the tournament was Jamie, another good friend and clubmate, bringing the undying legions (Necrons). Suffice it to say, I doubt he'll want to team up with me again any time soon. But I'll get into that later.

The List

Since it's a 2,000 point game, each player is expected to bring a 1,000 point list. My first of many mistakes was opting to use a Vanguard Detachment, sacrificing 3 CP off the bat. This is costly in thousand point list since we only start with 6 CP each. Thankfully Command Points are pooled between partners so I had Jamie to bankroll my CP-hungry Black Templars.

The plan was to march a 'doomblob' of screaming lunatics, stacked with defensive buffs and FNPs, up the table while getting heavy support from my two Redemptor Dreadnoughts and the large wall of Necron guns at my rear. Then, once the midfield was claimed, I would take the Templars as far as I could while the necrons move up to claim what I had cleared. However, it was Moltke who once said "No plan survives contact with the enemy"*. More on this later...

HQ

  • Chaplain Grimaldus (Litany of Divine Protection + Psalm of Remorseless Persecution)

Elites

  • Primaris Apothecary (Warlord, Chief Apothecary, Selfless Healer, The Crusader's Helm)
  • Bladeguard Veteran Squad (3x Bladeguard Veteran, Bladeguard Veteran w/ Icon of Heinmann, Sergeant)
  • Vanguard Veteran Squad (4x Vanguard Veteran w/ LC+SS, Sergeant w/ Fist of Balthus+SS, Jump Packs)
  • 2x Redemptor Dreadnought (2x Storm Bolter, Icarus Rocket Pod, Macro Plasma Incinerator, Onslaught Gatling Gun)

Performance

Here's where it gets a little rough. The list, it wasn't great. It sucked actually. I also sucked. In all three games, Grimaldus gave away 12VP for Assassinate. This combined with the list having basically no utility, lead to me being pretty much tabled by turn 3 in all our games. Through shoddy positioning and abysmal rolls, my Bladguard consistantly got steamrolled. No amount of Transhuman Physiology or FNPs were able to save them from Drazhar putting out 20 attacks or a giant blob of Abberants. My thoughts go out to Jamie, who despite pretty much being in a 1v2 for all three games, was still able to be a great sport and a welcome dose of high spirits throughout the day.

Allow me to whinge for a moment, if you will. What absolute wet sweatshirt sleeve at GW decided that Grimaldus' cenobytes would count as a character model for the purposes of the Assassinate secondary objective? At one point during one of the three games, Grimaldus got caught in the explosion of a nearby vehicle. D3 mortal wounds on a W5 model isn't a massive deal, especially with an apothecary on standby to rush over and kiss it better, right? Well, those 3 mortal wounds ended up obviously going on the Cenobytes first, as per Grimaldus' rules. Unfortunately, this meant that all three died. Bam! 9VP for Assassinate immediately. Absolutely shocking... (If you can't tell, I'm a little salty about it.)

Despite the obvious issues with the performance of myself and my list, I still had a great time. There was plenty of laughs and tense moments and each of the three games was still mostly enjoyable, despite the lacklustre display put forth by my Templars. Even if pretty much all three games' scoresheets looked like this:

The Ceremony

The doom and gloom quickly wore off when the grand ending ceremony began, however! A staple of GTGC, and now Atlas, is the greatly anticipated awards ceremony of every major event. Me and Jamie came dead last place with less than 80 points across three games. A pitiful display though we were able to snag the 'Wooden Spoon', a consolation bracket awarded to whoever did the absolute shittest. Hey, an awards an award!

Additionally, either through actual improvement or pity in the eyes of my peers for staying up all night in a last-minute 20-hour painting binge to get everything battle-ready, I was kindly voted the highest for the 'Best Painted' category, for which I am very grateful. It took me a minute to process what I had received as, at this point, I had been awake nearly 38 hours straight. Regardless, thanks to all who voted for me! It's good to know the improvement in my painting skills is so drastic that it could win an award :)

Here's a very low-res headshot of myself I stole from the video of the ceremony. Don't I just look dashing?

Closing Thoughts

All in all, a decent month! Again, sorry this has been so late. I am not an organised man and I'm spinning a lot of plates right now. I hope you've enjoyed this recap of my hobbying this month. I've got some big stuff coming to the Fistful of Beans social medias in the next couple of months. Perhaps even some YouTube content in the pipeline. Time will tell ;)

Speaking of which, the Fistful of Beans TikTok is now a thing. I'm too old to understand the app but I'll probably throw some tutorials or something up on it at some point. Check that out here!

So that's the month!

Cheers,

Ryan

Monthly Vox: 12 (April, 2022) - A Small Milestone

Howdy! I don't think I can really believe it's been a year since I started doing these monthly updates. Ironically, this is gonna be a rather short one as I actually didn't get up to much painting this month. But, as I said back last may, I would be reporting on whatever I did hobby-wise during the month, regardless of how much or how little I actually accomplished. So let's get into it!

Modelling and Painting

Chaplain Grimaldus

"To the darkness I bring fire. To the ignorant I bring faith. Those who welcome these gifts may live, but I will visit naught but death and eternal damnation on those who refuse them."

Honestly such a fantastic model to paint and I'm super happy with how he turned out! His armour has exactly the right black-blue hue and tint that I try to achieve with my other models but somehow fail to get consistent across my models. He still needs basing and a few transfers here and there but as I hate both those steps and am a lazy bastard I will count him as complete for now.

I still need to paint his little buddies as I plan on running him in a 40K Doubles Tournament next month. But more on that at a later date.

Tyranid Test Scheme

With the latest Imperium Magazine package, I received a handful of Tyranids. While I am yet to think of a backstory and name for my custom hive fleet I intend to give them all a nifty green scheme. I also plan on incorporating aquarium foliage to give them a cool jungle basing.

Final Thoughts

Okay, so I know this was late as hell, not to mention short, but I really didn't get up to much hobbying this month. Trust me, I would have if I could.

I will hopefully be writing next month's Vox from my new place where I should have room for certain other projects. Full details and a potential setup tour will likely be there too, assuming I don't give them their own dedicated post.

I also encourage you, in the mean time, to check out Warzone: Gannach, a collection of custom-written lore I use in an attempt to consolidate my headcanon and incorporate my armies together into a narrative for a bit of fun. Check it out!

Until next time, cya!

Cheers,
Ryan

HUGE Buff for Marines and Sororitas! (Warhammer 40K Balance Dataslate Q2 2022)

Hey all! I know I'm a few days late to the party (I was busy) but this week GW rocked their meta with a knew balance update for 40K. This update saw changes to several key mechanics within the game, as well as some various faction-specific tweaks in an attempt to bring an end to the meta dominance demonstrated by the Harlequins and Adeptus Custodes (May they rot in hell). I'll only be covering adjustments to 'Universal Matched Play Rules' as I feel these are the most important. However, if you're looking to see how your favourite faction dealt with this update, you can find that here!

So, let's take a look.

Armour of Contempt

'Each time an attack is allocated to an ADEPTUS ASTARTES, SANCTIC ASTARTES, HERETIC ASTARTES or ADEPTA SORORITAS model, worsen the Armour Penetration characteristic of that attack by 1.
This rule does not apply to any of the following:
  • Models equipped with a storm shield, a relic shield, or a combat shield (or a Relic that replaces one of these shields).
  • Models with either the Sacresant Shield or Force Shielding ability (CELESTIAN SACRESANT and NEMESIS DREADKNIGHT units).
  • Models that are under the effects of any other rule that worsens or reduces the Armour Penetration characteristic of an attack.'

A phenominal buff to Astartes and Sororitas that left most confused. To summarise what's written above, models belonging to the Space Marines, Sisters of Battle, Chaos Space Marines, and Grey Knights now reduce the AP of incoming attacks by 1.

For example, your Space Marine Intercessor is hit by an AP-1 Bolt Rifle. Before the update, this attack would increase your 3+ Armour Save to a 4+, obviously making it harder to save, this is no longer the case as you would decrease the incoming fire's AP to 0, allowing you to save on your normal 3+. This also affects weapons with higher AP. A Melta, an AP-4 weapon is now survivable on a 6+ without the need for cover or Invulns. This is not a phenominal save by any means but a 6+ is better than nothing.

Giving Chaos Cultists what effectively equates to a 4+ in cover is pretty damn tasty, as well as giving Space Marines a push in the meta, as they haven't been much of a presence for a good few months. Most surprising is the avenues this opens up for the Black Templars. While before, 'Uphold the Honour of the Emperor' was the go-to Vow for most lists, with it's main selling point of a 5++ now not even kicking in until AP-4 Weapons are used, the other vows are looking a lot more viable. It almost makes you wonder if this was the plan all along... (I'm onto you, GW.)

All in all, a welcome, albeit confusing, buff for power armour users.

Bodyguard

Change the end of all ‘Bodyguard’ abilities from:
‘enemy models/units cannot target that CHARACTER unit with ranged attacks.’
To:
'that CHARACTER unit can use the Look Out, Sir rule even if this unit contains fewer than 3 models.’

Bodyguard rules seem to be getting a kick while they're down. From their ruling back in 8th Edition that allowed them to intercept wounds on nearby characters, to their 9th Edition ruling that allowed them to deny ranged attacks against nearby characters, we now arrive at this. Bodyguard abilities now allow a unit to provide the Benefits of the 'Look Out, Sir' rule, despite having less than 3 models.

Anyone who knows how the 'Look Out, Sir' rule works will tell you this is not really an improvement at all but for those who don't; the rule basically denies Player A from making ranged attacks against player B's Character unit if a Player B has positioned a unit containing a vehicle or at least 3 non-character models in the firing line.

All this new ruling does is allow a unit to be under that 3 model threshold and still provide that benefit. It still has it's place but it's much less interesting than it was before, at least in my opinion.

Indirect Fire

An Indirect Fire weapon is one that can target units that are not visible to the bearer (e.g. mortars, smart-missile systems, impaler cannons, etc.). If such a weapon targets a unit that is not visible (i.e. no models in a target unit are visible to the firing unit when you selected it as a target), then each time an attack is made with that weapon against that target this phase, worsen the Ballistic Skill characteristic of that attack by 1 and add 1 to any armour saving throws made against that attack.

"Dear Grid Coordinates...."

Now this rule was an interesting one, not only granting a -1 modifier to a unit's hit rolls when blind-firing over terrain, but also providing the target with a +1 mod to their saves! This strikes me as a bit of a knee-jerk reaction to the performance the Tau have been putting out. Especially since, later on in the dataslate, it is noted that Astra Militarum are completely unaffected by this rule, allowing them to blind-fire their artillery wherever they like without consequence. I get it from a lore standpoint but if you're gonna nerf Tau, just do it. It should be noted that this also affects units like the Tyranids' Hive Guard.

So thats the Q2 2022 40K Balance Dataslate (what a mouthful). It's nice to see GW actually trying to fix the meta, even if they are doing it with the grace of an Imperial Knight in giant Crocs.

I'd also like to take a brief minute to congratulate Karl of Atlas Tabletop Gaming who opened their doors in the Gloucester Quays this week. Atlas Tabletop Gaming is a wonderful hobby shop ran by a great guy with great customer service. Atlas offers numerous major tabletop systems like Warhammer, Bolt Action, and Kings of War, and they're opening world-wide shipping soon! You can find them on their website or on social media!

Monthly Vox: 11 (March, 2022)

Hey all! Has it been a month already? This month saw a lot for me in the way of kitbashing. Mostly by rolling torsos around in my bits box and seeing what stuck. Through slapping glue and plastic together I was able to create 5 custom(ish) HQ character models. So, let's get into it!

Modelling and Painting

This month had very little actual painting done and was mostly me kit-bashing together various characters and alternate wargear loadouts for existing characters. Kit-bashing and converting is honestly more fun to me than painting as I find have to be in a particular mood to get the paints out but can casually assemble models and stick various bits together pretty much whenever I like with my only limit being my tacklebox full of left-over kit bits.

Chaplain w/ Power Fist and Jump Pack

Going into the start of this month I realised a lot of my HQ units lacked any fast and hard-hitting anti-vehicle options, hence where this little kitbash spree began. The first guy I put together was a Chaplain. I borrowed one of the Jump Packs from an unpainted squad of Vanguard Veterans (they're primaris-ized. click here to see how) to give him the mobility needed to get up the table quickly since I don't exactly have many bikes lying around. I then snipped the head off a Thunder Hammer and used an Iron Halo and a skull from the Black Templar upgrade sprue to create a nifty-looking Crozius for him. Stuck on some more religious gubbins and he was good to go!

Captain in Terminator Armour w/ Chainfist and Combi-melta

Based upon the updated Marneus Calgar model kindly donated to me by Ian from the GTGC, I was able to create this Terminator Captain. I shortened and attached a Chainsword to one of Calgar's power fists after removing the attached bolter to create a Chainfist. I then shaved the joint barrel off of a Storm Bolter and attached a singular barrel from a Bolt Pistol. I was unable to find any actual Melta Barrels I was willing to use so, instead, utilised one of the tubes from a Smokescreen Launcher I must have acquired from a Dreadnought or something and used that instead.

I'm particularly happy with the Combi-melta and how I made use of the left over cables from a box of Necron Warriors to give it an exposed and techy look. I added a tilt-shield as a buckler, as well as removing/hiding the Ultramarine symbols and replacing the head with one a bit more expected from a Terminator/Templar, and he was done.

Primaris Captain w/ Heavy Bolt Pistol, Relic Shield, and Master-crafted Power Sword

Now this was more of an adjustment than a kitbash. I painted this model up a while ago but was never really happy with how he looked. My painting has improved greatly since then and I feel more could have been done to make him appear as the Templar he is. So, I opted to replace his pauldronswith those found in the Black Templar upgrade kit as well as his sword. I gave him the Sword of Judgement and while I don't think I'll be running him with one, it looks too cool not to put on him. I can't wait to give this guy a nice new lick of paint.

Primaris Lieutenant w/ Master-crafted Stalker Bolt Rifle

I wanted this guy to be a long range threat, taking down heavy infantry from afar. As such, I gave him the Stalker Variant of the Bolt Rifle and the head of an Eliminator Sgt for a suitably tactical look. As his distance from the melee made giving him a Power Sword redundant (I know, I know. "Bad Templar Player"), I opted not to give him one. This meant that his left arm was going to be empty. I figured any Templar not wielding a melee weapon with his free hand should at least be carrying some sort of relic or icon. As such, I opted to give him the Skull of Cacodominus bit from the Templar upgrade kit. While I probably wont run the relic on him in games, it looks too cool not to give it to him.

Captain w/ Storm Shield, Thunder Hammer, and Jump Pack

I always hear so much praise around "Smash Captains" and I figured I should probably have one. I borrowed another Jump Pack from my Vanguard Veterans, as well as one of the Bladeguard Veteran bodies from the same squad I turned into the Lieutenant and Chaplain (I rarely run more than 5 and these guys were just sitting in a draw), and got to work. I gave him one of the Bladeguard Storm Shields, as well as a Vanguard Thunder Hammer and some Templar Upgrade kit pauldrons and presto! A very quick and easy job.

Final Thoughts

Now I know there wasn't much painting this month but I hope the kitbashes were sufficient. I'm currently in the process of saving for a move that will allow me the space to have a real hobby setup for painting, writing, and even filming. I plan on being a lot more active with the Fistful of Beans YouTube Channel in the next few months once I have things set up. Over there I plan on doing short-form content like commentaries and tutorials as well as painting-timelapses and possibly live-streams so look forward to that!

Until next time...

Ryan

"WE'RE BACK" The Return of Squats to Warhammer 40K

Well paint me orange and call me a Jokaero, they're back! In what can only be described as unfortunate timing, the Leagues of Votann find themselves back on the frontlines. Originally assumed, by myself and many others, to be an elaborate April Fools jab at the community, perhaps accompanied by a Kill Team or Blackstone Fortress expansion, the Squats are indeed confirmed to return.

However yesterday, April 2nd, a Warhammer Community post did indeed confirm that humanity's stout, bearded, cousins are back!

Accompanied by the reveal of a new model and a new designated faction name that, face it, nobody is going to call them, we have now gotten a good look at what to expect in terms of weaponry and style.

What are Squats?

Squats, or Homo Sapiens Rotundus, are an abhuman cousin of humanity that take on the traditional archetype of the hardy dwarf. Known for their sturdy fortresses, masterfully-crafted equipment, and short stature, the Squats were, at one point, one of the most wide-spread abhuman species in the galaxy.

However, during the late 90s and the beginning of third edition, Squats were almost-completely taken out of 40K. Most models in their range ceased production and very little has been heard about them since. Most would believe that the entire species was eaten by Tyranids thanks to the following response from Issue 240 of White Dwarf in regards to the issue:

"Would you believe they were all eaten by the Tyranid invasion? Or, due to the Squats biker life style, everyone of them was arrested for disturbing the peace and sacrificed to the Emperor. Where do you think they get all of those souls anyway? All kidding aside, it doesn't seem likely the Squats will ever again see the light of day. When they were out they never seemed very popular, showed up at our stores, or tournaments, and didn't sell on top of all that. Their look was really outdated compared to the hundreds of other great Warhammer 40,000 models. Don't send us hate mail, it's just the cold hard facts of the 41st Millennium." - unnamed GW employee

However, its quite clear to see that the sentence suggesting Tyranids brought the Squats to their end is worded as more of a passing question than definitive statement, leading the true in-universe fate of the Squats up for question. Perhaps we'll get some answers to the true fate of the Squats in the upcoming months before we see them hit the table.

So what are your thoughts? Are you excited to see the return of the Squats? Could you not care less? Let me know in the comments or over on Twitter/Instagram.

Cheers,
Ryan
