HUGE Buff for Marines and Sororitas! (Warhammer 40K Balance Dataslate Q2 2022)

Hey all! I know I'm a few days late to the party (I was busy) but this week GW rocked their meta with a knew balance update for 40K. This update saw changes to several key mechanics within the game, as well as some various faction-specific tweaks in an attempt to bring an end to the meta dominance demonstrated by the Harlequins and Adeptus Custodes (May they rot in hell). I'll only be covering adjustments to 'Universal Matched Play Rules' as I feel these are the most important. However, if you're looking to see how your favourite faction dealt with this update, you can find that here!

So, let's take a look.

Armour of Contempt

'Each time an attack is allocated to an ADEPTUS ASTARTES, SANCTIC ASTARTES, HERETIC ASTARTES or ADEPTA SORORITAS model, worsen the Armour Penetration characteristic of that attack by 1.
This rule does not apply to any of the following:
  • Models equipped with a storm shield, a relic shield, or a combat shield (or a Relic that replaces one of these shields).
  • Models with either the Sacresant Shield or Force Shielding ability (CELESTIAN SACRESANT and NEMESIS DREADKNIGHT units).
  • Models that are under the effects of any other rule that worsens or reduces the Armour Penetration characteristic of an attack.'

A phenominal buff to Astartes and Sororitas that left most confused. To summarise what's written above, models belonging to the Space Marines, Sisters of Battle, Chaos Space Marines, and Grey Knights now reduce the AP of incoming attacks by 1.

For example, your Space Marine Intercessor is hit by an AP-1 Bolt Rifle. Before the update, this attack would increase your 3+ Armour Save to a 4+, obviously making it harder to save, this is no longer the case as you would decrease the incoming fire's AP to 0, allowing you to save on your normal 3+. This also affects weapons with higher AP. A Melta, an AP-4 weapon is now survivable on a 6+ without the need for cover or Invulns. This is not a phenominal save by any means but a 6+ is better than nothing.

Giving Chaos Cultists what effectively equates to a 4+ in cover is pretty damn tasty, as well as giving Space Marines a push in the meta, as they haven't been much of a presence for a good few months. Most surprising is the avenues this opens up for the Black Templars. While before, 'Uphold the Honour of the Emperor' was the go-to Vow for most lists, with it's main selling point of a 5++ now not even kicking in until AP-4 Weapons are used, the other vows are looking a lot more viable. It almost makes you wonder if this was the plan all along... (I'm onto you, GW.)

All in all, a welcome, albeit confusing, buff for power armour users.

Bodyguard

Change the end of all ‘Bodyguard’ abilities from:
‘enemy models/units cannot target that CHARACTER unit with ranged attacks.’
To:
'that CHARACTER unit can use the Look Out, Sir rule even if this unit contains fewer than 3 models.’

Bodyguard rules seem to be getting a kick while they're down. From their ruling back in 8th Edition that allowed them to intercept wounds on nearby characters, to their 9th Edition ruling that allowed them to deny ranged attacks against nearby characters, we now arrive at this. Bodyguard abilities now allow a unit to provide the Benefits of the 'Look Out, Sir' rule, despite having less than 3 models.

Anyone who knows how the 'Look Out, Sir' rule works will tell you this is not really an improvement at all but for those who don't; the rule basically denies Player A from making ranged attacks against player B's Character unit if a Player B has positioned a unit containing a vehicle or at least 3 non-character models in the firing line.

All this new ruling does is allow a unit to be under that 3 model threshold and still provide that benefit. It still has it's place but it's much less interesting than it was before, at least in my opinion.

Indirect Fire

An Indirect Fire weapon is one that can target units that are not visible to the bearer (e.g. mortars, smart-missile systems, impaler cannons, etc.). If such a weapon targets a unit that is not visible (i.e. no models in a target unit are visible to the firing unit when you selected it as a target), then each time an attack is made with that weapon against that target this phase, worsen the Ballistic Skill characteristic of that attack by 1 and add 1 to any armour saving throws made against that attack.

"Dear Grid Coordinates...."

Now this rule was an interesting one, not only granting a -1 modifier to a unit's hit rolls when blind-firing over terrain, but also providing the target with a +1 mod to their saves! This strikes me as a bit of a knee-jerk reaction to the performance the Tau have been putting out. Especially since, later on in the dataslate, it is noted that Astra Militarum are completely unaffected by this rule, allowing them to blind-fire their artillery wherever they like without consequence. I get it from a lore standpoint but if you're gonna nerf Tau, just do it. It should be noted that this also affects units like the Tyranids' Hive Guard.

So thats the Q2 2022 40K Balance Dataslate (what a mouthful). It's nice to see GW actually trying to fix the meta, even if they are doing it with the grace of an Imperial Knight in giant Crocs.

I'd also like to take a brief minute to congratulate Karl of Atlas Tabletop Gaming who opened their doors in the Gloucester Quays this week. Atlas Tabletop Gaming is a wonderful hobby shop ran by a great guy with great customer service. Atlas offers numerous major tabletop systems like Warhammer, Bolt Action, and Kings of War, and they're opening world-wide shipping soon! You can find them on their website or on social media!

Monthly Vox: 11 (March, 2022)

Hey all! Has it been a month already? This month saw a lot for me in the way of kitbashing. Mostly by rolling torsos around in my bits box and seeing what stuck. Through slapping glue and plastic together I was able to create 5 custom(ish) HQ character models. So, let's get into it!

Modelling and Painting

This month had very little actual painting done and was mostly me kit-bashing together various characters and alternate wargear loadouts for existing characters. Kit-bashing and converting is honestly more fun to me than painting as I find have to be in a particular mood to get the paints out but can casually assemble models and stick various bits together pretty much whenever I like with my only limit being my tacklebox full of left-over kit bits.

Chaplain w/ Power Fist and Jump Pack

Going into the start of this month I realised a lot of my HQ units lacked any fast and hard-hitting anti-vehicle options, hence where this little kitbash spree began. The first guy I put together was a Chaplain. I borrowed one of the Jump Packs from an unpainted squad of Vanguard Veterans (they're primaris-ized. click here to see how) to give him the mobility needed to get up the table quickly since I don't exactly have many bikes lying around. I then snipped the head off a Thunder Hammer and used an Iron Halo and a skull from the Black Templar upgrade sprue to create a nifty-looking Crozius for him. Stuck on some more religious gubbins and he was good to go!

Captain in Terminator Armour w/ Chainfist and Combi-melta

Based upon the updated Marneus Calgar model kindly donated to me by Ian from the GTGC, I was able to create this Terminator Captain. I shortened and attached a Chainsword to one of Calgar's power fists after removing the attached bolter to create a Chainfist. I then shaved the joint barrel off of a Storm Bolter and attached a singular barrel from a Bolt Pistol. I was unable to find any actual Melta Barrels I was willing to use so, instead, utilised one of the tubes from a Smokescreen Launcher I must have acquired from a Dreadnought or something and used that instead.

I'm particularly happy with the Combi-melta and how I made use of the left over cables from a box of Necron Warriors to give it an exposed and techy look. I added a tilt-shield as a buckler, as well as removing/hiding the Ultramarine symbols and replacing the head with one a bit more expected from a Terminator/Templar, and he was done.

Primaris Captain w/ Heavy Bolt Pistol, Relic Shield, and Master-crafted Power Sword

Now this was more of an adjustment than a kitbash. I painted this model up a while ago but was never really happy with how he looked. My painting has improved greatly since then and I feel more could have been done to make him appear as the Templar he is. So, I opted to replace his pauldronswith those found in the Black Templar upgrade kit as well as his sword. I gave him the Sword of Judgement and while I don't think I'll be running him with one, it looks too cool not to put on him. I can't wait to give this guy a nice new lick of paint.

Primaris Lieutenant w/ Master-crafted Stalker Bolt Rifle

I wanted this guy to be a long range threat, taking down heavy infantry from afar. As such, I gave him the Stalker Variant of the Bolt Rifle and the head of an Eliminator Sgt for a suitably tactical look. As his distance from the melee made giving him a Power Sword redundant (I know, I know. "Bad Templar Player"), I opted not to give him one. This meant that his left arm was going to be empty. I figured any Templar not wielding a melee weapon with his free hand should at least be carrying some sort of relic or icon. As such, I opted to give him the Skull of Cacodominus bit from the Templar upgrade kit. While I probably wont run the relic on him in games, it looks too cool not to give it to him.

Captain w/ Storm Shield, Thunder Hammer, and Jump Pack

I always hear so much praise around "Smash Captains" and I figured I should probably have one. I borrowed another Jump Pack from my Vanguard Veterans, as well as one of the Bladeguard Veteran bodies from the same squad I turned into the Lieutenant and Chaplain (I rarely run more than 5 and these guys were just sitting in a draw), and got to work. I gave him one of the Bladeguard Storm Shields, as well as a Vanguard Thunder Hammer and some Templar Upgrade kit pauldrons and presto! A very quick and easy job.

Final Thoughts

Now I know there wasn't much painting this month but I hope the kitbashes were sufficient. I'm currently in the process of saving for a move that will allow me the space to have a real hobby setup for painting, writing, and even filming. I plan on being a lot more active with the Fistful of Beans YouTube Channel in the next few months once I have things set up. Over there I plan on doing short-form content like commentaries and tutorials as well as painting-timelapses and possibly live-streams so look forward to that!

Until next time...

"WE'RE BACK" The Return of Squats to Warhammer 40K

Well paint me orange and call me a Jokaero, they're back! In what can only be described as unfortunate timing, the Leagues of Votann find themselves back on the frontlines. Originally assumed, by myself and many others, to be an elaborate April Fools jab at the community, perhaps accompanied by a Kill Team or Blackstone Fortress expansion, the Squats are indeed confirmed to return.

However yesterday, April 2nd, a Warhammer Community post did indeed confirm that humanity's stout, bearded, cousins are back!

Accompanied by the reveal of a new model and a new designated faction name that, face it, nobody is going to call them, we have now gotten a good look at what to expect in terms of weaponry and style.

What are Squats?

Squats, or Homo Sapiens Rotundus, are an abhuman cousin of humanity that take on the traditional archetype of the hardy dwarf. Known for their sturdy fortresses, masterfully-crafted equipment, and short stature, the Squats were, at one point, one of the most wide-spread abhuman species in the galaxy.

However, during the late 90s and the beginning of third edition, Squats were almost-completely taken out of 40K. Most models in their range ceased production and very little has been heard about them since. Most would believe that the entire species was eaten by Tyranids thanks to the following response from Issue 240 of White Dwarf in regards to the issue:

"Would you believe they were all eaten by the Tyranid invasion? Or, due to the Squats biker life style, everyone of them was arrested for disturbing the peace and sacrificed to the Emperor. Where do you think they get all of those souls anyway? All kidding aside, it doesn't seem likely the Squats will ever again see the light of day. When they were out they never seemed very popular, showed up at our stores, or tournaments, and didn't sell on top of all that. Their look was really outdated compared to the hundreds of other great Warhammer 40,000 models. Don't send us hate mail, it's just the cold hard facts of the 41st Millennium." - unnamed GW employee

However, its quite clear to see that the sentence suggesting Tyranids brought the Squats to their end is worded as more of a passing question than definitive statement, leading the true in-universe fate of the Squats up for question. Perhaps we'll get some answers to the true fate of the Squats in the upcoming months before we see them hit the table.

So what are your thoughts? Are you excited to see the return of the Squats? Could you not care less? Let me know in the comments or over on Twitter/Instagram.

Cheers,
Ryan
