History

The Beacon

Even those approached at the Adeptus Mechanicus are unsure what enabled the beacon. Some would believe it's activation to be the work of the Necrons themselves, others believe in a possible outside influence at the hands of an unknown interloper. The origin's of it's activation are unimportant at the present.

When the beacon fired in the middle centuries of M41, it was only a matter of time before the barely-human forms of the Mechanicus walked upon Cryptus II's radiation-scorched surface. In the blink of a galactic eye, research posts and study sites were erected across the dead world, all with the intent of prying the beacon from the ancient dunes for study.

Of course, like moths to a flame, more followed. Driven by their lust for foreign sensation, the infernal forces of Chaos, both daemon and astartes alike, were drawn to the Sector. The Beacon could apparently be heard even within the expanse of the Warp. The forces of Slaanesh had replied with sirens.

The Cryptus II Slaughter

Answering the faint and dated hails of the Adeptus Mechanicus came the Adeptus Astartes, notably the Black Templars. The High Marshal was keen to put the freshly-bolstered ranks, courtesy of one Archmagos Belisarius Cawl, to the test and saw it appropriate to assist the very agents that had assisted in the conception of the Rubicon Primaris. He declared the Gannach Crusade to be a mighty bulwark of the Black Templars and of the Imperium, with the newly promoted Marshal Reinhardt at it's boss.

But it was to be a bloody first conflict for the newly inducted Marshal. Obscured by radioactive dust and a surge in warp activity, intelligence about the inhospitable world the zealous astartes found themselves on was low. Before they could set foot upon the planet, they were met with a devastating hostile response. Automated energy pylons sent arcs of scorching matter while scores of soulless automata turned the sour toxic skies to a curtain of gauss and the scorching wreckage of imperial aircraft. The Necrons had awoken...

Shamed and frustrated, Marshal Reinhardt withdrew his brothers and seeked to consolidate his force. Pressing the offensive, while honourable, would be foolish this day. All traces of any mechanicus forces had vanished and yet still, the beacon chimed...

Geography, Habitability, & Infrastructure

Cryptus II is an irradiated wasteland of rad-scorched sour green/yellow sand. What few structures can be found on the dead world, appear ancient and alien in origin, with the most-likely former occupants to have been what are now the Necrons. The planet is completely inhospitable to almost all life, with most biological life requiring drastic augmentation or technological assistance to survive or succumb to the harsh rad-storms and blistering rays of the planet's sun.

Beneath the planet's glassed crust, endless sprawling tunnels of Necron tombs and subterranean caverns branch out like capillaries, filled with all manner of ancient sentinel drones and mutants. However, there are treasures to be found down in the unfathomably complex corridors and crypts. The Nihilakh elites that once dwelled on the world spared no expense at the expansion and defence of their hoards.

Military Forces

As of the present, the planet is defended by seemingly-infinite legions of Necrons. Invasion of the world is seemingly impossible without an almost-certain probability of defeat. In addition to this, the amassed wealth of the Necrons has aided them greatly in their awakening. The construction of new vessels in orbit around the cursed world, along with the recently-awoken crews of voidcraft buried within eons of stellar debris have given the Necrons a tremendous naval force.
