Monthly Vox: 10 (February, 2022)

Hey! Yes, I know this is a late one. My assignments have been kicking my ass up and down this month. I've not accomplished too much in the hobby department but I still have few things to share, namely the small local 1500pt tournament I took part in at the lovely GTGC. I have no grandiose tales of triumph or masterful plays. I'll be honest. I lost all three of my games and placed at a mediocre 16th of 30. I did, however, have a helluva lot of fun so read to the end to hear more about it.

Modelling and Painting

This month there were very few models I finished completely as my main goal was to get things battle-ready for the tournament. There are plenty of unshaded, unhighlighted, messy-rimmed, models left over from the frantic binge leading up the big day and I honestly wouldn't feel good showing them off in any depth until I get round to properly finishing them.

Primaris Chaplain on Bike

It took me two runs at this model to really get into it and I honestly don't know if I'm happy with it yet. The aggressive cobalt blending really reads as more of a blue under intense lights but looks very good under dimmer conditions. This model has so many intricate details and different materials involved which means it has a surprising amount of places to draw the eye to. Still not sure what to name this guy but he's already kicking ass on the table and doing Big E proud!

Mechanicus Scheme Test

With my acquisition of some Skitarii, courtesy of Imperium Magazine, I was able to kickstart my Mechanicus force. I already have a few ideas for the lore behind these guys but didn't have a scheme down yet so I just started slapping colour on and seeing what looked good. I opted to go for a dark purple scheme as it just looked cool while maintaining red as my accent colour as homage to their Martian heritage. I'm also planning to do a subterranean basing theme, opting for a Blackreach-esque glowing fungus aesthetic on my bases. I can't wait to get stuck into these guys and really build up a collection. The Flesh is Weak!

The GTGC February 1.5k Single Mingle

As mentioned earlier, I placed 16th of 30. Not great, obviously, but man I had a good time despite getting my ass handed to me. I was actually a little late arriving to the event thanks to Stagecoach West and the Number 10 bus, requiring a pickup from one of the few people who hadn't started drinking yet (thanks Dean).

The Games

I don't have the scores or missions on hand and the whole thing was honestly too much of a caffeine-fuelled blur for me to remember so forgive my rather lackluster synopsis of the event. I'm mostly going off memory here, writing this more than three weeks after the tournie took place. Great job, me...

Game 1 (Admech, Loss)

Having just arrived I was immediately thrown into conflict with a hefty force of Ad Mech. My opponent made great use of the many +1s that Ad Mech seem to have to survive my onslaught of heavy hitting melee, while also using their many bodies to gum up my vehicles and chunkier units. However, I do feel as if this game moved a little slow, only making it to the end of turn 3 where things were certainly on the up for me. Alas, it was too late at that point. I lost this game by about 5 or so points.

Game 2 (Dark Angels, Loss)

My second game was against Dark Angels and it was refreshing to see some marines on the other side of the table. However, a large beefed-up blob of Deathwing Knights, supported by numerous Terminator Squads, a Terminator Apothecary and one of the beefiest Slash Chaplains I have ever had the awe of fighting, quickly had me on the backfoot.

After some large melee clashes I simply did not have the numbers left to score any objectives. By taking numerous centre-field secondaries, alongside the one of the mission's primaries, my opponent and their un-killable blob of Knights was able to quickly rack up points and left me in the dust. I lost this game by like 50 points.

Game 3 (Dark Angels, Loss)

Yes, you read that right. Of the three games I played, two of them were against these bloody traitors. This time, however, I was against an incredibly mobile bike-based list complete with a land speeder that I remember having some of the worst aim I have ever seen. While the list wasn't particularly killy, it's mobility allowed it to smash against my brick wall of a list and hold me back while my opponent scored primaries in the early game. By the time I was able to kill most of their bikes, it was too late. I was already too far behind. I lost this game by around 40 or 50 points.

Conclusion

In the end I scored a total of 166 VP across the 3 games, brining me to 16th place of a possible 30. As with the last tournie, I seemed to go, near enough, right down the middle in terms of my placement. It's nothing to brag about but it's not last so I'll take that as a victory. A big thank you to everyone who took part and the wonderful GTGC Witan for setting it all up. You're doing god's work, fellas.

Final Thoughts

So there we have it! A late, half-assed, synopsis of my hobbying this month. I know it wasn't the most in-depth but I have been swamped. I'm honestly only writing this to further procrastinate from doing my assignments*. A big thank you to everyone who has continued viewing content on this site despite it's infrequent posts. It's crazy to see this site pulling some pretty decent numbers despite my laziness and lack of time. Things are clearing up a little in the coming weeks so I'll try to be more active here. In the meantime, as always, check out the Fistful of Beans Instagram and Twitter for more content to tide you over.

Until next time...

Cheers,
Ryan

*It's as if that's the exact issue that put me in this situation to begin with or something.... Probably not though, right?
